Your slicer's cut tool

Free, built into Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer. You place each cut by hand and can add connectors.

Catch: one cut at a time. Fine for a few cuts, slow for a model that needs dozens, and you track and plate every piece yourself.

Blender add-ons

Add-ons like Bed Fit Splitter ($19) split a model inside Blender and add dowel holes.

Catch: you need to know Blender, and you get loose STL files to arrange on plates yourself.

Split3r

Automatic splitting with tenon joints and numbered parts. €60 to €95, one-time. Windows, Mac and Linux.

Catch: about three to five times the price, and no plate layout, so you arrange every piece in your slicer.

LuBan 3D

Automatic splitting with joints and numbered parts. $30 a month, $150 a year or $750 lifetime, with a 30-day trial.

Catch: the price, no plate layout, and in my experience it's clunky and hard to learn.

Scale & Cut 3D

I made Scale & Cut 3D for my own Halloween props, after cutting big prints by hand for years. You give it a model and the finished size you want, and it does the rest in one pass:

It's $20 one-time for Windows and Mac, on up to two computers. Since you read this far, here's 25% off.

Limits, honestly: cuts are straight and placed automatically, so you can't yet pick where each one goes, and a seam can land across a detailed area like a face. There's no Linux or Intel Mac version. It's also new, so there are fewer reviews than for the older tools.

Which one should you use?

Want an app to do the cutting?

Scale & Cut 3D cuts your model into pieces that fit your printer, adds pegs and part numbers, and lays them out on plates for Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer. Windows and Mac, $20.

Questions

What is the cheapest way to split a large 3D model?

The free cut tool in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. It works well for a few cuts. For models that need many pieces, an automatic tool saves a lot of time; Scale & Cut 3D is $20 one-time.

Is there software that splits a model automatically?

Yes. LuBan 3D, Split3r and Scale & Cut 3D all cut a model into pieces that fit your build volume automatically and add connectors. Scale & Cut 3D also lays the pieces out on plates for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer.

What's a cheaper alternative to LuBan 3D?

Split3r (€60 to €95 one-time) and Scale & Cut 3D ($20 one-time) both split models automatically for much less than a LuBan license.
